Renata's Forest Creek home in Round Rock had two stucco piers at the front of the courtyard and nothing between them, so delivery drivers walked straight up to the front windows. We hung a pair of 30 in flat-top leaves in black powder-coated steel, on steel posts set inside the piers so no hinge load sits on the stucco. The latch lands at the center stile, the flagstone walk now stops at the pair, and the arched front door still shows from the street. The estimated cost was $1,300 to $2,400, over an estimated 5 to 10 hours.

How a Courtyard Gate Differs From a Side-Yard Walk Gate

A courtyard gate is the front elevation of your house, while a side-yard walk gate only has to match a fence. Phoebe's 42 in walk gate at an older home near Old Town follows the iron beside it, and our pedestrian entry gates page covers that job. Renata's pair of 30 in leaves between stucco piers had to answer to two piers, a door and a flagstone walk.

What a Courtyard Gate Costs in Round Rock

A single courtyard leaf falls in an estimated $600 to $1,500, and a pair like Renata's ran an estimated $1,300 to $2,400. Phoebe's single wrought iron leaf came in at an estimated $800 to $1,300, which is a fair marker for one hand-built leaf with no new posts. Arches cost more than flat tops, because each rail has to be rolled and fit before the coat.

The far end of this work is Nadia's 20 ft arched pair between two columns off Barton Creek Boulevard, at an estimated $6,200 to $8,000. Ask any bidder to price the fixing as its own line, since a vague hinge attachment often turns into a change order on install day.

Why the Wall Behind the Hinge Matters Most

The wall decides how a courtyard gate is hung, and a bad fixing is the failure we get called to repair. That is why Renata's leaves hang from steel inside the piers in Forest Creek, not from the stucco skin.

Pier or wallHow we usually fix to itWhat can go wrong
Solid limestoneThrough-bolted hinge platesSoft stone close to a corner
Stone veneerFixing carried back to the structureVeneer pulling away from the backing
Stucco over blockSteel post or anchors into filled cellsA hollow cell at hinge height
Stucco over framingSteel post set inside or besideWater entering at the fixing

If we cannot confirm what sits behind the stucco, we open a small test spot on the court side before we quote.

Keeping the Door in View, or Hiding It

Open pickets keep the door visible, and that was Renata's call in Forest Creek, while a closed infill turns the entry into a wall.

  • Open vertical pickets suit most Round Rock stone and stucco elevations and let the porch light reach the walk.
  • A scroll panel suits older entries, like the solid bar with forged scrolls and cast collars at Nell's home near Courthouse Square.
  • A horizontal infill suits a modern elevation, like the charcoal slats Curtis picked in Buttercup Creek; see our horizontal slat gates page for gap choices.

Plan where the lanterns sit before the leaf is built, so the latch does not land in the shadow of a pier after dark.

HOA and City Steps Before You Build

A courtyard gate faces the street, so assume the HOA will want to see the drawing first. We have not listed a height or setback figure here, because the rule depends on your lot. Check with your board and with the City of Round Rock before you commit, and bring us the answer so that it goes into the drawing.

Materials for a Courtyard Gate

Powder-coated steel is the usual courtyard material, and wrought iron bar is the step up when the entry calls for hand work. Perry's rail at a hillside home in The Hills is that same wrought iron bar in a satin black powder coat, and more of that work is on our wrought iron gates page. Lydia's gate on a hillside lot in West Lake Hills used galvanized steel with flat-top pickets, the frame covered under steel gate installation. A court with a pool is different again, since Ximena's fence near The Park on Doe Run is powder-coated aluminum with a self-closing gate.

Why Owners Trust Us With the Front of the House

Owners pick us because one crew measures the piers, fixes the hinges and hangs the leaves, so nothing gets lost between a salesperson and an installer. Over 12 years in business and more than 1,187 projects, the entry work has run from one 42 in leaf to pairs between stone columns.

Courtyard Entry Gate Service Areas

We build courtyard gates across a 35-mile radius, from Round Rock entries in Forest Creek and near Old Town to Cedar Park, Georgetown and the estate lots of Barton Creek. Claudia's stone home off Barton Creek Boulevard shows how far an entry can go, with a single 4 ft by 9 ft iron entry door with sidelites behind it.

Related Work for a Front Entry

Grant's 22 linear ft on a porch stair and landing near the San Gabriel River is the kind of iron railing that shares a finish with new leaves. Lupe's ranch scroll panel in bronze powder coat off SH 29 shows how custom driveway gates can be drawn from the same stock as the walk leaves.

Courtyard Gate Questions From Round Rock Homeowners

What should I budget for a courtyard gate?

Budget an estimated $600 to $1,500 for one leaf, and more for a pair; Renata's pair ran an estimated $1,300 to $2,400.

How long does it take to install?

Expect an estimated 4 to 8 hours for one leaf once it is built, and an estimated 5 to 10 hours for a pair on new posts.

Can you hang a gate from my stucco piers?

Often yes, though usually from steel set inside the pier rather than from the stucco itself, as we did in Forest Creek.

Do I need HOA or city approval?

Possibly both, so check with your board and the City of Round Rock before we finalize the drawing.

Can the leaves match my existing fence or railing?

Yes, we match bar size and powder coat from physical samples, as on Vince's matte black leaves off New Hope Drive in Cedar Park.

What does the warranty cover?

Our 2-year workmanship warranty covers welds, hinges and footings on the leaves we install.
