Phoebe called us because the front walk had no gate, and the fence beside it had pulled away from the stone post. On site in Round Rock, we drew a simple arch to the fence height, core-drilled the post and set a thumb latch at the owner's hand height. The 42 in walk gate, built in wrought iron bar, satin black powder coat, came to an estimated $800 to $1,300 and took an estimated 4 to 8 hours. Today the older home near Old Town has what Phoebe wanted, because the gate closes with one finger and matches the iron fence beside it.

Where a Walk Gate Goes and What It Needs

In Georgetown and Cedar Park, a walk gate sits in one of three places, and the place decides the hinge side, the post and the latch. A gate set into a fence line needs a post that does not move, and a gate beside a driveway leaf needs to match that leaf.

Walk gate positionWhat it needsBest for
Front walk in a fence lineA solid post and a drawn top to meet the fence heightHomes with a low or older fence
Beside a driveway leafMatching bars, finish and top to the driveway gateEntries where walkers and cars share a frontage

Pedestrian Entry Gate Cost in Round Rock

A custom pedestrian entry gate in Round Rock typically costs an estimated $600 to $1,500 installed, and the width, the top style and the post work move the number most.

What Every Pedestrian Entry Gate Includes

Base protection
G90 hot-dip galvanizing or a zinc-phosphate and e-coat base goes on before any color, on a Leander gate
Topcoat
TGIC polyester powder coat at 3 to 5 mils, oven cured, picked from physical samples, so Cedar Park owners see the finish first
Hinges
ball-bearing pairs rated from 500 to more than 1,500 lbs, matched to the weight of the finished leaf
Picket spacing
3.5 to 3.875 in between pickets, our own spec; 1.5 to 2 in puppy pickets on request, for a Georgetown yard

Latch, Self-Closing and Pool Safety Code for a Walk Gate

A walk gate fails first at the latch, so for a Barton Creek yard the latch is the part we plan around. A latch set too high or too low gets propped open in Steiner Ranch or anywhere else, and a gate that stays open does nothing for a pool. Where a pool safety fence needs a walk gate, we confirm with your inspector what the barrier code asks of the closing and latching hardware before we weld the keeper. Picket spacing stays at our 3.5 to 3.875 in spec, with 1.5 to 2 in puppy pickets on request, so a child cannot pass through a Leander gate.

How a Walk Gate Is Measured and Hung

A walk gate goes in over a single visit once the leaf is fabricated, and the order keeps the opening square.

  1. Measure the clear opening between posts at the top and the bottom, because posts rarely sit parallel.
  2. Test the post by hand and, on stone or an older post, core-drill rather than weld to it.
  3. Fabricate, galvanize and powder coat the leaf in our shop.
  4. Shoot the grade across the full swing path and set bottom rail clearance from that measurement, then hang the leaf and set the latch at your hand height, work that typically takes an estimated 4 to 8 hours on site.

Fence, Setback and HOA Rules for a Walk Gate

Round Rock has no residential fence permit, but a lot on a Historic Overlay needs a Certificate of Appropriateness first, and a 2016 ordinance covers street-facing fences over 4 ft, with no more than 1 ft of lean. Georgetown requires a permit and sets a 4 ft front rule, Cedar Park sets its own front setback for wrought iron on large lots, and Lakeway bans flat tops with spikes, so we read your city's rule before we draw.

Materials for a Walk Gate

Wrought iron bar and galvanized steel both suit a walk gate, and the choice follows the fence it joins. Compare frames on our steel gate installation page, or see how forged parts differ on our wrought iron gates page. The Balcones Escarpment splits blackland east from limey loam west through Williamson County, so we check the ground on site and set footings 24 to 36 in deep and 10 to 12 in wide, poured in 3,000 to 4,000 PSI concrete, checked against the soil found on site.

A walk gate often pairs with a custom driveway gate, a run of wrought iron fencing or a pool safety fence around the yard. A walled front entry usually calls for courtyard entry gates instead.

Pedestrian Entry Gate Questions From Round Rock Homeowners

How much does a pedestrian entry gate cost in Round Rock?

A pool safety fence typically runs an estimated $30 to $45 per linear foot, with the walk gate quoted on top at an estimated $600 to $1,500.

How long does a walk gate install take?

Plan on an estimated 4 to 8 hours on site, in Steiner Ranch or Round Rock, because the leaf arrives already fabricated.

Can you hang a gate on an old stone post?

Yes, we core-drill the stone and pin the hinge rather than weld to a post that cannot take heat.

How is a walk gate finished?

G90 hot-dip galvanizing or a zinc-phosphate and e-coat base goes on before any color on every Shady Hollow walk gate, then TGIC polyester powder coat at 3 to 5 mils, oven cured, picked from physical samples.

Can the walk gate match my driveway gate?

Yes, and we hang both on ball-bearing pairs rated from 500 to more than 1,500 lbs, matched to the weight of the finished leaf, so the two read as one entry.

Does a walk gate need a permit in Round Rock?

Usually not, since Round Rock sets no residential fence permit, but an older walk on a Historic Overlay lot wants a Certificate of Appropriateness before we hang anything.

What warranty comes with a walk gate?

In West Lake Hills and Round Rock alike, ours is a 2-year workmanship warranty on our welds, hinges, footings and operator installation.
