Perry called us about a hillside home with a second-floor doorway in The Hills. French doors opened onto nothing but a drop, and the stone front gave few places to anchor. We laid the anchor points out on the mortar lines and built the rail in two pieces to lift it up the slope. The 14 linear ft of Juliet and balcony rail, in wrought iron bar with a satin black powder coat, came to an estimated $1,100 to $1,700 and took an estimated 5 to 10 hours. The doors now open to a real rail, and no anchor shows from the street.

Anchor, Height and Code Risks on an Iron Balcony

A balcony rail fails first at its anchors, so we read the wall before we draw the rail. On stone, an anchor in the wrong spot can crack the unit and work loose, which is why Perry's anchors follow the mortar lines. Spacing holds at our 3.5 to 3.875 in spec, 1.5 to 2 in puppy pickets are on request, and we confirm the required rail height with your building inspector before we weld. A door that opens over a drop also needs its rail in place before anyone uses that door again, so we schedule the install around the opening, not around the coat.

Steps to Measure, Build and Hang a Balcony Rail

A balcony rail goes up in four steps, and the anchor layout is set before anything is cut.

  1. Measure the doorway or the slab and read the wall for solid anchor points.
  2. Lay the anchors out on the mortar lines or the framing, and draw the rail to them.
  3. Build the rail in the shop, in two pieces where it has to go up a slope, then apply the base and the topcoat.
  4. Lift the pieces, join them and check the fit, work that typically takes an estimated 5 to 10 hours on site.

Historic Overlay and HOA Rules for a Balcony Rail

Round Rock's historic review applies to every structure on a Historic Overlay site, so on one of those lots we check whether a balcony rail needs a Certificate of Appropriateness first. An HOA in Barton Creek, Steiner Ranch or Shady Hollow may also send exterior iron through design review, so we read your covenant before we quote a finish. For anything else, we confirm with your building inspector what the rail has to meet, because the answer depends on the wall, the height and the use.

Materials for an Iron Balcony

Wrought iron bar suits a light Juliet rail, and heavier solid bar steel with a flat black powder coat took the longer run of 22 linear ft on a porch stair and landing at Grant's older home near the San Gabriel River, as our stair and porch railings page explains. Forged scrolls add weight and detail, and solid bar with forged scrolls and cast collars in a bronze finish went into Nell's pair near Courthouse Square, shown on our forged wrought iron gates page. Older iron on a balcony gets scraped and repainted with DTM polyurethane enamel every 3 to 5 years, typically for an estimated $30 to $50 per linear foot.

Why Homeowners Trust Our Balcony Anchors

Round Rock owners choose us because the same crew reads the wall, welds the rail and sets every anchor. Our 12 years and more than 1,187 projects taught us where a wall will hold an anchor, and the 2-year workmanship warranty on our welds and footings backs the work.

Iron Balcony Service Areas

We build iron balconies across Round Rock and the nearby cities, with most doorway rails in The Hills, Lakeway and West Lake Hills, plus Georgetown and Cedar Park. Our 35 mile service radius also takes in Leander, Barton Creek and Shady Hollow.

Related Iron for the Upper Floor

A balcony often pairs with a spiral iron staircase, like the 11 ft rise, 5 ft diameter spiral with steel treads, a center column and a bronze powder coat at Odalys's lake-view home with a rooftop deck. The door behind the rail can change too, as with Claudia's single 4 ft by 9 ft door with sidelites on our custom iron entry doors page, and a matching stair guard is on our iron railings for porches page.
