Gate Operators Sized, Wired and Tested

Our team provides operator sizing, delivering a gate that opens on the first press for homes and tested safety devices for both residential and commercial projects. In 12 years in business, the over 1,187 projects we have done include one operator on a 14 ft pair and matched estate entries, each with our 2-year workmanship warranty.

From the reversal test at every point of travel to a keypad programmed before we leave, our team handles the full automation. Serving Cedar Park, Georgetown, Leander and Round Rock, we size each operator to the leaf it has to move.

Dennis had a long leaf that had to open uphill on a driveway with a slight crown near the street, on a cul-de-sac lot near Old Settlers Park. We picked a 24V brushless arm with a battery and set the hinge post back so the leaf cleared the crown. The 14 ft single leaf in 14-gauge steel, black powder coat came to an estimated $3,100 to $4,400 and took an estimated 1 to 2 days on site. The gate now runs on one remote and a keypad, and the reversal test passed at every point of travel.

How to Choose an Automatic Gate Operator

The operator is chosen by the weight and length of the leaf, how often the gate cycles and where the power comes from, in that order. Our standard in Cedar Park and Round Rock is 24V DC brushless motors with battery backup, sized to leaf weight, length and duty cycle.

  • Weight: a heavy leaf loads the arm, so we pair it with ball-bearing pairs rated from 500 to more than 1,500 lbs, matched to the weight of the finished leaf, as we did near Old Town.
  • Duty cycle: a household gate that cycles all day needs a motor rated for it, which is why a busy family drive gets a different arm than a ranch gate.
  • Power: a trenched line from the house, or a solar setup with a 10 to 30W panel where the drive is far from an outlet.
  • Opening direction: arms suit swing leaves, while rack-and-pinion drives suit the slides we hang in Leander.

Automatic Driveway Gate Cost in Round Rock

An automatic driveway gate in Round Rock typically costs an estimated $2,500 to $5,000 for a single swing leaf with its operator, photo eyes and remotes, and the leaf length, the power run and the entry devices move the number most. A manual gate that only needs a motor is the lower-cost path, as for the owner past Lake Georgetown whose one operator on a 14 ft manual pair came out well under a new gate.

Safety Tests and Fire Access on an Automatic Gate

An automatic gate must stop and reverse when it meets a person or a car, and we prove it with a test at every point of travel before handover. After an older opener with no working eyes struck a child's bike in a Round Rock drive off US 79, we fit monitored photo eyes and edge sensors and run the reverse test on every device at handover. Fire access is a separate question from convenience. Round Rock's Fire Marshal published Emergency Access Controlled Gate Systems Guidelines in July 2023 for fire-lane gates: a Knox key switch that bypasses the keypad, an Opticom receiver, a gate that opens freely or by hand release when power fails, and an acceptance test. A house driveway gate is not a fire-lane gate, so on a house we ask your fire authority what applies and wire a Knox key switch, Opticom receiver or siren sensor, set to whatever the local fire authority calls for.

Power Failure, Battery Backup and Hand Release

A gate with battery backup keeps cycling through a power cut, and a hand release lets you move the leaf when the battery is spent. A storm-season surge left a gate dead in Cedar Park and the keypad had stopped lighting at all, so we replace the control board, keypad and surge protection together. We set the release where a person can reach it without crawling, and we show you how it works before we leave. Solar operators suit long ranch drives, and we cover them on our solar gate operators page.

Materials for an Automatic Gate

Steel is the frame that carries an operator best, because the motor loads the hinge post and the leaf every cycle. Our frames run 14-gauge tube for standard leaves, 11-gauge to 3/16 in where a long or tall leaf has to hold its line, which keeps a Round Rock leaf from sagging into the arm. You can compare frames on our steel gate installation page or look at forged ornament on our wrought iron gates page.

Automatic Gate Service Areas

We install automatic gates across Round Rock and the nearby cities of the north Austin metro, with most operator work in Cedar Park, Georgetown and Leander, plus Lakeway and The Hills on our service area page. Barton Creek sits well inside the 35 mile radius we keep around the shop.

Automatic Driveway Gate Questions From Round Rock Homeowners

How much does an automatic driveway gate cost in Round Rock?

A single swing leaf with its operator, photo eyes and remotes comes to an estimated $2,500 to $5,000, and the power run moves your quoted figure most.

How long does an automatic gate install take?

Most single swing installs in West Lake Hills take an estimated 1 to 2 days on site.

Can you add an operator to a gate I already have?

Yes, if its hinges and frame can carry the motor, and the retrofit then typically takes an estimated 4 to 8 hours.

What happens to the gate when the power goes out?

Battery backup keeps a gate cycling through the power cut, and a hand release lets you open it by hand when the battery runs down.

Does an automatic gate need a Knox key switch?

It depends on the fire authority and the type of gate, so we ask before we wire, and we fit the Knox switch or Opticom receiver they call for.

Is the gate safe for children and pets?

Yes, an older opener with no working eyes had struck a child's bike in the drive, so every Round Rock gate now gets monitored photo eyes and edge sensors, each device reverse tested at handover.

Can I run a gate on solar power?

Yes, a 10 to 30W panel and battery runs an operator on a drive with no power at the road.

What does your warranty cover on an automatic gate?

The operator maker covers the motor and controls separately, and ours is a 2-year workmanship warranty on our welds, hinges, footings and operator installation.
