Roy's acreage tract off US 183 in Leander had no power at the road and a trailer turning in weekly. We hung an 18 ft single swing in galvanized square tube, ranch cross-bar pattern, with a 24V DC brushless motor and battery backup sized to the weight and length of that leaf, ran a solar panel to the operator and set a Knox key switch at the post. Roy's 18 ft gate came to an estimated $3,600 to $5,000 and took an estimated 1 to 2 days on site. Roy's trailer now swings in off US 183 in Leander without anyone leaving the truck.

How Wide a Ranch Gate Needs to Be

A ranch gate has to clear the widest rig that turns in, so the opening is sized from the trailer, not from the fence. A gooseneck in Georgetown needs a wide, flat approach, and a gate that opens inward needs room to swing.

  • Width: an 18 ft leaf like Roy's in Leander clears a livestock trailer with room to swing wide off the road.
  • Approach: a Leander driveway off US 183 needs a pull-off deep enough that the truck is out of traffic while the gate opens.
  • Power: a tract in Georgetown with no line at the road runs solar with a 10 to 30W panel instead of a trench.
  • Access: a Knox key switch, Opticom receiver or siren sensor, set to whatever the local fire authority calls for, lets crews into a locked tract.

Budgeting a Ranch Entry Gate in Round Rock

A ranch entry gate in Round Rock typically costs an estimated $2,500 to $5,000 for a single swing with its operator, and the leaf length, the tube gauge and the power source move the number most. A plain 12 ft leaf in Round Rock sits near the low end, while a long solar leaf like Roy's 18 ft gate sits near the top.

Solar, Trailer and Highway Risks for a Ranch Gate

A ranch gate fails at the battery and the hinge, so on a Leander or Georgetown tract those are the parts we plan around. A long leaf with no power at the road leans on a panel that has to see the sun, and a panel set in shade starves the battery. A leaf this long also loads its hinge, so the post gets ball-bearing pairs rated from 500 to more than 1,500 lbs, matched to the weight of the finished leaf. We set each post plumb, hang the leaf, and test the reversal at every point of travel, on monitored photo eyes and edge sensors alike. A truck stopped at a Leander highway gate is a hazard to traffic, which is why the pull-off is part of the plan. Round Rock's Fire Marshal published Emergency Access Controlled Gate Systems Guidelines in July 2023 for fire-lane gates, and a ranch entry is not a fire-lane gate, so we fit a Knox key switch, Opticom receiver or siren sensor, set to whatever the local fire authority calls for.

Permit, Setback and HOA Rules for a Ranch Entry

Acreage inside Round Rock takes no residential fence permit, yet a Historic Overlay lot must secure a Certificate of Appropriateness first and street-facing fences over 4 ft come under a 2016 ordinance. Leander requires a permit only for fences over 7 ft, and Leander automatic access gates carry a Knox KS-2. Georgetown requires a fence permit under UDC 8.07, a step that did not apply to Roy's tract in Leander. Texas SB 711 lets an HOA require a driveway gate set back 10 ft where the driveway meets a laned road, effective September 1, 2025, and it applies to a ranch subdivision in Cedar Park the same way. We read the deed restrictions before we set a post, from Round Rock to Georgetown.

Materials and Finish for a Ranch Gate

Galvanized square tube carries a long ranch leaf best, and G90 hot-dip galvanizing or a zinc-phosphate and e-coat base goes on before any color, then TGIC polyester powder coat at 3 to 5 mils. Compare frames on our steel gate installation page, the solar side on our solar gate operators page, and the motor choice on our automatic driveway gates page. West of the Balcones Escarpment a ranch post sits in limey loam and east of it in blackland, so we read the ground on site before any concrete goes in.

Why Round Rock Landowners Choose Our Ranch Gates

Leander and Georgetown landowners choose us because the same crew walks the fence line, welds the leaf and sets the panel. Over 1,187 projects in 12 years have taught us how a ranch gate is used, and the 2-year workmanship warranty on our welds, hinges, footings and operator installation stands behind it.
