Curtis parked a trailer and work truck beside his Buttercup Creek home in Cedar Park, in full view of the street behind a chain-link panel. We cut a 14 ft manual swing leaf and 18 ft of fence from one drawing in charcoal powder-coated steel, with each slat line carried across the post so gate and fence read as one wall. The side yard is now hidden from the sidewalk, and he still swings the leaf by hand on his own. The estimated cost was $3,000 to $4,700, over an estimated 3 to 5 days.

Why Choose Slats Over Pickets

Slats are the right choice when you want to hide what is behind the gate, and pickets are better when you want to keep seeing through it. Curtis needed that screen for his trailer in Cedar Park. Blake's 110 linear ft of 5 ft fence on a greenbelt lot above Lake Austin did the opposite job, because that owner wanted the trees to stay in sight.

What a Slat Gate Costs in Round Rock

A slat run falls in an estimated $85 to $145 per linear foot for gate and matching fence, and Curtis's 32 linear ft job ran an estimated $3,000 to $4,700. An operator adds its own line, with a retrofit at an estimated $1,800 to $3,800 per system, so Kendra's retrofit on a 12 ft swing pair off US 79 is a fair marker for that cost.

Ask each bidder how the slats attach and whether the lines carry across the posts, since those answers explain most of the gap between two similar quotes.

What Goes Into Each Slat Gate

Frame steel
14-gauge tube for standard leaves, 11-gauge to 3/16 in where a long or tall leaf has to hold its line
Base protection
G90 hot-dip galvanizing or a zinc-phosphate and e-coat base goes on before any color
Topcoat
TGIC polyester powder coat at 3 to 5 mils, oven cured, picked from physical samples
Post footings
24 to 36 in deep and 10 to 12 in wide, poured in 3,000 to 4,000 PSI concrete
Hinges
Ball-bearing pairs rated from 500 to more than 1,500 lbs, matched to the weight of the finished leaf
Gate clearance
Grade is shot across the full swing or slide path, and bottom rail clearance is set from that measurement

Wind, Weight and Why Slat Gates Need Stiffer Frames

A close slat gate behaves like a sail, so its posts and frame have to be sized for more load than an open picket gate of the same width. Soil also changes from one side of the service area to the other, so post footings 24 to 36 in deep are checked against what we find on site, as on Neil's new poured posts near Bailey Middle School in Shady Hollow. If your opening is exposed, like Roy's acreage tract off US 183 in Leander, say so at the site visit so that we can size the posts for it.

Swing, Slide or Manual

A swing leaf is the simplest choice if the drive is flat, and a slide suits a short or sloped apron. Curtis kept a manual swing because he opens it a few times a week, and a manual leaf can take an operator later, as with Arlo's 24V brushless operator on a 14 ft manual pair past Lake Georgetown. Marshall's 16 ft slide across a level drive in Leander shows the other route for a narrow side-entry lot. Rudy's 12 ft single swing on a steep grade in The Hills shows why we shoot the grade first, and Carmen's 20 ft cantilever on a rising grade in Lakeway is the option when neither works. If you open the gate daily, plan an operator from the start; our automatic driveway gates page covers that choice, and sliding gates explains when a slide makes more sense.

HOA and City Steps Before You Build

A solid-looking slat gate draws more HOA attention than an open one, so show your board the gap and color before you order. We have not listed a height or setback rule on this page, because it depends on your lot and your community. Check with your board and with the City of Round Rock, or with your own city if you are outside it, and we will draw to whatever they say.

Materials for a Slat Gate

Powder-coated steel slats on a square tube frame are the standard build, charcoal is what Curtis chose in Buttercup Creek, and the frame options are on our steel gate installation page. Stan's 14 ft replacement leaf near Steiner Ranch Elementary used aluminum-faced steel in dark bronze powder coat, which is worth pricing if weight is a concern on existing posts; see gate replacement for that route. Cor-Ten panels skip the color coat and weather on purpose, so we keep them away from pale stone or concrete that could stain.

Why Owners Trust Us With Modern Gates

After 12 years in business and more than 1,187 projects, we draw the slat lines before we cut anything, and the same crew hangs what the shop builds. Our 2-year workmanship warranty covers welds, hinges, footings and operator installation.

Horizontal Slat Gate Service Areas

We build slat gates across a 35-mile radius, from Curtis's Cedar Park home in Buttercup Creek to properties in Round Rock, Pflugerville, Leander and Austin. Larger lots near Kelly Lane and off New Hope Drive are where a long screen run tends to make the most sense.

How long does the work take?

Plan on an estimated 3 to 5 days on site for a gate and fence run like the one in Buttercup Creek.

How a job runs

From the First Walk to the Final Check

  1. Walk the opening

We read the grade, the wind exposure and the swing or slide path before a line is drawn.

  2. Drawing sign-off

You sign off on a scaled drawing, the metal and the finish before any steel is cut.

  3. Build in the shop

Our welders fabricate the frame and slats, then the gate goes out for coating before it comes to your property.

  4. Hang and check

We set the posts, hang the gate and check that every slat runs level; a powered gate gets its safety test in front of you.
