Rudy's wooded lot on a steep shared drive in The Hills needed a leaf that would not rack, and he was torn between steel and aluminum. We chose heavier steel over aluminum for the stiffness and cut the leaf short of the slope's high side. The 12 ft single swing on a steep grade, built from 11-gauge tube, zinc-phosphate base, black powder coat, came to an estimated $3,200 to $4,300 and took an estimated 1 to 2 days. The leaf holds its line, and the access details went to the ESD No. 6 fire marshal's office before it went live.

Steel, Aluminum, Wrought Iron or Weathering Steel

The metal decides how a gate sags, how it rusts and what it costs to keep, so the choice comes before the design. Steel is stiff and takes a coating well; aluminum does not rust but flexes more on a long leaf; wrought iron is solid bar with forged detail and the most weight; weathering steel rusts on purpose and can stain the stone or concrete beneath it.

MetalWhere it winsWhat to watch
Galvanized steel tubeWide leaves, steep drives and heavy useThe coating must be sealed at every cut and weld
AluminumLight leaves and walk gates near wet groundMore flex on a long span, so the frame needs more depth
Wrought iron barEstate fronts that need forged scrolls and collarsWeight on the hinges and a finish that needs upkeep
Weathering steelA rusted look with no paintRun-off stains stone and concrete below it

The same steel adapts to the lot in front of it. Facing a street we build galvanized steel with flat-top pickets, black powder coat, and on a covenant lot we set powder-coated steel on new poured posts. Steel also carries a 16 ft opening on a sloped apron and an 18 ft slide on a level pad without a change of gauge. Two 7 ft leaves across a 14 ft opening are a pair that steel hangs without sagging at the meeting stiles, in Barton Creek as readily as in West Lake Hills. Solid bar with forged scrolls and cast collars, bronze finish belongs to our wrought iron work, while a stone home off Barton Creek Boulevard might take steel with thermal break, seeded glass, oil-rubbed bronze finish at its entry door. A hillside home with a second-floor doorway took wrought iron bar, satin black powder coat for its 14 linear ft of Juliet and balcony rail, and a corner lot near Bailey Middle School took a 16 ft opening on a sloped apron with powder-coated steel on new poured posts. A home near Courthouse Square in Georgetown took two 7 ft leaves across a 14 ft opening in bronze finish.

Racking, Rust and Code Risks on a Steel Gate

A steel gate fails first at the weld and the cut edge, so on a Georgetown drive those are the parts we plan around. A thin frame sags on its hinge side and drags on the pavement, and bare steel at a cut starts to rust under the paint if the zinc was ground away. Heavier tube and a coat applied after welding answer both, and we seal every cut before the topcoat. A 12 ft single swing on a steep grade, built from 11-gauge tube, zinc-phosphate base, black powder coat, is the build we reach for on a slope. Fire access is its own risk: Round Rock's Fire Marshal published Emergency Access Controlled Gate Systems Guidelines in July 2023 for fire-lane gates, so on a house we send the access details to your fire authority, as we did for Rudy's steep drive.

Steps to Build and Hang a Steel Gate

A steel gate moves from a site visit to a hung leaf in four steps, and each one is checked before the next begins.

  1. Shoot the grade across the full swing or slide path, then measure the opening between posts, because bottom rail clearance is set from that measurement.
  2. Cut and weld the frame from the gauge the span calls for, then grind the welds smooth.
  3. Galvanize or prime with zinc phosphate, then powder coat and cure in the oven.
  4. Hang the leaf on matched hinges, set the stop and test the swing, which typically takes an estimated 1 to 2 days on site.

Fence, Setback and HOA Rules for a Steel Gate

No residential fence permit is required for a steel gate in Round Rock, but a Historic Overlay lot must first hold a Certificate of Appropriateness, and a 2016 ordinance governs any street-facing fence over 4 ft. An HOA in Cedar Park or Leander may require a driveway gate set back 10 ft where the driveway meets a laned road under Texas SB 711, effective September 1, 2025. Lakeway bans flat tops with spikes, so we read the rule for your city before we draw.

Materials and Finish Beyond Steel

Steel is the frame for most of our gates, and the finish decides how long it looks new. For hand-forged scrolls and cast collars, read our wrought iron gates page, and for the motor that drives a heavy leaf, see our automatic driveway gates page. A steel leaf is heavy, so from Steiner Ranch to Shady Hollow we test the soil on site, blackland east of the Balcones Escarpment or limey loam west, before any footing goes in.

Why Steel Gate Buyers Hire Our Shop

Round Rock owners choose us because the same crew welds the frame, coats the leaf and hangs it on the drive. Over 1,187 projects in 12 years have taught us where a steel gate sags and what the soil does to a post. A 2-year workmanship warranty on our welds, hinges, footings and operator installation stands behind each one.

Steel Gate Service Areas

We install steel gates across Round Rock and the nearby cities, with most heavy-leaf work in Cedar Park, Leander and Georgetown, plus Lakeway and The Hills. A 35 mile service radius from the shop also covers Steiner Ranch, West Lake Hills, Barton Creek and Shady Hollow.

Steel Gate Questions Worth Asking

How much does a steel gate cost in Round Rock?

Typically an estimated $2,500 to $5,000 for a single swing steel gate with an operator, and frame gauge plus grade decide where your written quote lands.

Is steel or aluminum better for a driveway gate?

Steel holds a long or steep leaf in line, while aluminum suits light leaves, which is why Rudy's steep drive in The Hills got heavier steel.

How long does a steel gate install take?

Most Cedar Park and Leander steel swing gates take an estimated 1 to 2 days on site.

How is a steel gate protected from rust?

Rust protection starts below the paint: G90 hot-dip galvanizing or a zinc-phosphate and e-coat base goes on before any color, and the top layer is TGIC polyester powder coat at 3 to 5 mils, oven cured, picked from physical samples.

How thick is the steel in the frame?

14-gauge tube for standard leaves, 11-gauge to 3/16 in where a long or tall leaf has to hold its line.

Does a steel gate need a permit in Round Rock?

No, the city asks for no residential fence permit, though a Historic Overlay lot must get a Certificate of Appropriateness before work starts.

What warranty does a steel gate carry?

A steel gate in Round Rock or Georgetown carries the same 2-year workmanship warranty on our welds, hinges, footings and operator installation.
