Nell's home near Courthouse Square in Georgetown had a rusted pair that had lost its scrolls, and she wanted real forged work rather than stamped parts. We forged new scrolls, primed every joint before the bronze coat and kept a front fence under Georgetown's 4 ft rule. The 14 ft opening, two 7 ft leaves, in solid bar with forged scrolls and cast collars, bronze finish, came to an estimated $6,400 to $8,000 and took an estimated 2 to 3 days. The pair reads as period iron and carries a finish built for the rust that took the old one.

Forged Parts, Cast Parts or Stamped Ornament

Forged ornament is heated and hammered, so every scroll differs slightly and holds a thick section; cast parts are poured in a mold and repeat exactly, which suits collars and finials; stamped parts are thin sheet pressed flat and show their hollow back.

Wrought Iron Gate Cost in Round Rock

A hand-forged wrought iron fence in Round Rock typically costs an estimated $85 to $130 per linear foot, and a forged driveway pair typically costs an estimated $4,000 to $8,000, with the scroll count and the leaf width moving the number most.

Rust, Weight and Code Risks on an Iron Gate

Water gets under a coat at a weld, a cast collar or a scroll tip, and rust then lifts the paint from inside, which is why we scrape rust and repaint with DTM polyurethane enamel every 3 to 5 years on older iron, typically for an estimated $30 to $50 per linear foot. Where a tube frame sits behind the forged work, it runs in 14-gauge tube for standard leaves, 11-gauge to 3/16 in where a long or tall leaf has to hold its line. Fire-lane gates in Round Rock answer to the Fire Marshal's Emergency Access Controlled Gate Systems Guidelines, published July 2023, so before a forged leaf goes up at a house we ask whether the local fire authority wants a Knox key switch, Opticom receiver or siren sensor on it.

Steps to Forge and Hang a Wrought Iron Gate

An iron gate moves from a sketch to a hung leaf in four steps, and the ornament is approved before any iron is heated.

  1. Sketch the scroll pattern against the fence line and approve the layout.
  2. Forge the scrolls, fit the cast collars and weld the leaf from solid bar.
  3. Prime every joint, then apply the base, the topcoat and the oven cure.
  4. Hang the leaf once the grade is shot across the full swing or slide path and bottom rail clearance is set from that measurement.

Fence, Setback and HOA Rules for a Wrought Iron Gate

An iron gate on a Round Rock lot needs no residential fence permit unless a Historic Overlay applies, which calls for a Certificate of Appropriateness first, and street-facing fences over 4 ft fall under a 2016 ordinance. Georgetown requires a permit and sets a 4 ft front rule, Cedar Park sets its own front setback for wrought iron on large lots, and Lakeway requires a continuous flat top with no spikes. Texas SB 711, effective September 1, 2025, also lets an HOA hold a forged driveway pair 10 ft back where the drive meets a laned road.

Care and Materials for Wrought Iron

Iron needs a washed finish and a touch-up at the first chip, because bare iron starts to rust within weeks. For frames without forged detail, read our steel gate installation page, and for the fence that matches the gate, see our wrought iron fencing page. The Balcones Escarpment splits blackland east from limey loam west, so posts go 24 to 36 in deep and 10 to 12 in wide, poured in 3,000 to 4,000 PSI concrete, checked against the soil found on site.

Wrought Iron Gate Questions and Answers

How much do wrought iron gates cost in Round Rock?

A dual swing estate gate with operators is typically an estimated $4,000 to $8,000, and the scrolls we write into your quote settle the final price.

What is the difference between forged and cast iron parts?

Forged parts are hammered by hand and vary slightly, while cast parts are poured in a mold and repeat exactly.

How do you keep an iron gate from rusting?

Keep bare metal covered: the iron gets G90 hot-dip galvanizing or a zinc-phosphate and e-coat base first, then an oven-cured TGIC polyester powder coat at 3 to 5 mils in a color you pick from physical samples.

How long does an iron gate install take?

A dual swing pair takes an estimated 2 to 3 days on site, and a hand-forged wrought iron fence beside it an estimated 3 to 6 days.

Can you match an older gate?

Yes, as on Nell's pair near Courthouse Square, we forged new scrolls to match period iron. Phoebe's 42 in walk gate near Old Town also matches the iron fence beside it.

Does an iron gate need a permit in Round Rock?

No, not for a residential fence in Round Rock, though a lot inside a Historic Overlay must get its Certificate of Appropriateness before we hang the leaf.

What warranty comes with wrought iron gates?

Welds, hinges, footings and operator installation all fall under our 2-year workmanship warranty, whether the job is a pair like Nell's or a walk gate like Phoebe's.
