Lydia's hillside lot on a narrow frontage in West Lake Hills needed a closed entry under a code that wants 80 percent see-through and no points. We kept the pickets open, topped them flat, set the leaf behind the required setback and put a battery on the operator. The 18 ft slide on a level pad, built in galvanized steel with flat-top pickets, black powder coat, came to an estimated $3,300 to $4,800 and took an estimated 2 to 3 days. The entry closes tight and still reads as open from the road.

Open Pickets, Solid Panels or Privacy Slats at the Entry

How much a gate hides decides how much code applies to it, so the picket choice comes before the lock. An open picket gate satisfies a see-through rule and still stops a casual walk-in; a solid panel gives privacy but fails a see-through front; privacy slats sit between the two and need a check against your city.

The same closed-entry thinking carries across our other work. A corner lot near Bailey Middle School in Shady Hollow took powder-coated steel on new poured posts, set back from the sight line. A home near Courthouse Square in Georgetown took solid bar with forged scrolls and cast collars, bronze finish, kept under the 4 ft front rule. A stone home off Barton Creek Boulevard took steel with thermal break, seeded glass, oil-rubbed bronze finish at the door, and a hillside home with a second-floor doorway took wrought iron bar, satin black powder coat on its balcony rail. Each one started with the street's rule, not the lock.

Other jobs show the range. A 14 linear ft Juliet and balcony rail in The Hills ran an estimated $1,100 to $1,700 over an estimated 5 to 10 hours. A single 4 ft by 9 ft pivot entry door with sidelites in Barton Creek ran an estimated $7,500 to $12,500 over an estimated 1 to 2 days. An automated dual swing on a 16 ft opening on a sloped apron in Shady Hollow ran an estimated $4,800 to $6,900 over an estimated 2 to 3 days, and an automated 12 ft single swing on a steep grade in The Hills ran an estimated $3,200 to $4,300.

Code, Sightline and Entrapment Risks on a Security Gate

A security gate fails first at the code check, so in West Lake Hills and Lakeway the rule is the part we plan around. West Lake Hills wants a see-through front of 80 percent and a Knox-style access box for ESD 9, and Lakeway has banned flat tops with spikes since 2019, so a design that is legal in one city can be refused in the next. A closed entry also traps fingers and bumpers unless it senses them, which is why monitored photo eyes and edge sensors, every device tested at handover, ride on every security leaf we hang in Round Rock and Cedar Park. Round Rock's Fire Marshal published guidelines in July 2023 for fire-lane gates only, so on a house we ask your fire authority what applies.

Steps to Secure an Entry Without Closing It In

A security gate goes from a site visit to a tested entry in four steps, and each one answers a question the street will ask.

  1. Read the city rule for the front: see-through share, picket top, setback and fire access.
  2. Draw the leaf with open pickets, flat tops and the 3.5 to 3.875 in gap we spec.
  3. Fabricate and coat the leaf, then set the track or hinges and the operator with its battery.
  4. Test every sensor, photo eye and keypad before handover, which typically takes an estimated 2 to 3 days on site.

Fence, Setback and HOA Rules for a Security Gate

A closed entry in Round Rock takes no residential fence permit, though Historic Overlay lots must first win a Certificate of Appropriateness and a 2016 ordinance governs street-facing fences over 4 ft. A Georgetown front stays under its 4 ft rule and takes a permit, while the ARC of an HOA in Steiner Ranch, Barton Creek or Shady Hollow may review the picket design too. Security leaves near a laned road can also land under Texas SB 711, effective September 1, 2025, which lets an HOA push a driveway gate 10 ft back from where the drive meets that road.

Materials and Access Control for a Security Gate

Steel carries a closed entry best, and the keypad, intercom or phone entry sits on a pedestal beside it. Compare frames on our steel gate installation page, or read how entry devices are chosen on our gate access control page. Footings for a closed entry depend on which side of the Balcones Escarpment you sit, blackland east or limey loam west, so the ground gets checked on site first.
